Talcum is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate. Its rock is naturally slippery and very soft, with a pearly luster. Talcum's sheet-like structure imparts distinctive qualities
When Talcum is added in paint as filler its platy structure improve suspension of other solid mineral fillers and pigments. Talcum also increases coverage and weather resistance of the products. The use of Talcum creates a barrier effect, which limits the penetration of water and corossive agents into paints and coatings. This properties lead to a reduction in bubble formation, corossion and peeling.
Talcum pacifies pitch and stickies throughout the papermaking process, during flotation, cleaning and in the finished paper. Talcum can be added to the process at different points depending un processing factors, the nature of the fibre and the size of contaminants. It is used as a filler to give smoothness, porosity and opacity to paper in addition to reducing the cost.
The addition of talc powder to plastics can improve their melt flow properties. Talc acts as a lubricant, reducing the friction between polymer chains during processing.Talc powder enhances the thermal stability of plastics, preventing degradation during processing at high temperatures.Talc's lamellar structure provides anti-blocking properties to plastic films and sheets.
