About Soapstone
Soapstone, also known as steatite or soap rock, is a metamorphic rock classified as talc-schist. It is predominantly composed of talc, with varying proportions of micas, chlorite, amphiboles, carbonates, and other minerals. Formed through dynamic thermal metamorphism and metasomatism, soapstone occurs in tectonically active regions where heat, pressure, and fluid movement alter existing rocks without melting them. This transformation yields a material that has been highly valued for carving over thousands of years. Typically appearing in hues of gray, blue, green, or brown, soapstone is renowned for its soft, "soapy" texture, attributable to its high talc content.
Applications in the Paper Industry
The paper industry is the largest consumer of soapstone talc, using it extensively for various purposes. Soapstone talc serves as a filler in the manufacturing process, providing paper with a silky, porous, and opaque surface. Its hydrophobic nature helps control pitch and stickiness, reducing wear and tear on paper machines. Additionally, because soapstone talc is less abrasive than ground calcium carbonate (GCC), it extends the life of the wire and felt used in paper production.
